July 1, 1863: The Battle of Gettysburg Begins
150 years ago today, Union and Confederate forces began fighting in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The two armies collided unexpectedly, and provoked the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The Confederate army’s fail invasion of the North became a major turning point in the war. The three day battle resulted in nearly 51,000 soldiers killed, wounded, or captured.

I might be wrong when I said OD&D’s emphasis on huge dungeons derived mostly from Gygax, since I forgot Arneson published a 10-level version of Blackmoor Dungeons in TFFC.
